Friday Night on River Street
Beth and I stroll
River Street
embedding the roaches
into cobblestone caskets.
Bahama Mamas and
Attitude Improvements
clutched in our hands,
we lounge on benches . . .

Desert Mind Movies
Chartreuse mountains erupt
from deep within the terrain,
red mist rises from
cold black sargasso sea.
Gibbous moon slips through
gnarled fingers of ancient elm,
home of the buzzard . . .

Broken
My no longer mesmerized heart
has stopped,
stifled,
strangled by your golden band,
thrown to the floor,
at the brink of unlife,
drained of identity,
innocence surrendered, virtue lost,
. . .

OK, so I was driving to class the other night and there was this really pretty sunset that was reflecting upon the river. I had this image in my head and some good lines for a poem, but I'm not sure . . .

Velma's Decrescendo
In Portsmouth,
five chairs cluster
around a hospital bed--
mine is by the door.
The smell of sterile sickness,
bleached scrubbed vomit
and urine stains,
wafts past to the hall. . . .

Awakening
I love the ritual –
lift the cover,
reach for the light.
A snap, crackle and pop
loosens the bindings.
Smell of fresh ink
upon the sheets,
as I sip fresh-brewed coffee.

January War
I survive on rations
of orange juice
and peanut butter saltines
as I lie in the trenches
between the covers
of my bed
fighting for sleep.
Medicated hallucinations,
an army of germ . . .

A Love Poem... Sort Of
I love your brain
the winding corridors
and dust-coated thoughts
yielding treasures at every turn
Unlock the secret door
I want to come in
and be
the only picture in your mind... . . .

Untitled Love Poem
I reach out
across the night
between the stars
searching for you...
My heart is empty
growing cold with your absence
crying out into the darkness
and receiving no response
I need . . .

Untasted
You complained of hunger;
I dangled before you
on the vine,
perfectly ripened fruit
full of juicy sweetness
to satisfy your craving
with one . . .

Winter Rain
An icy rain of
frozen crow spit
dances on my umbrella
as I splash
down the street
on my way home.

Jam at the Spectrum
I dance among cigarette smoke
and beer puddles
as hot bodies writhe and wriggle
around me,
rivulets of sweat stream
down foreheads to mat hair
to sweltering skin.
Red and green . . .

Gertrude and William
Two Canadian geese
with downy grey bodies
and black feathered eyes
huddle the curve
of a tractor tire,
out of the snow.
We prepare a straw bed for them
and scatter yellow seed . . .

December
An Ohio wind
gashes my skin
with icicle teeth,
freezes my grey heart
in still beats
while treeless leaves
peek through
new fallen drifts
and I shiver
into the warmth
of teddy bear slippers . . .

Madame Zolaria
In a candlelit room,
an older woman sits
dressed in fringed red scarves
and quartz crystals.
Jasmine incense
ribbons into smoke
that dances among
the frayed lace curtains.
At a . . .

on the balconies pushing
ant-men to drive
their Matchbox cars

Last Day
The pegasus with clipped wings
struggles to escape empty land
under a maganta sky,
cracked hooves meld with
molten granite.
Earthbound with skyward dreams.
White-hot sun bakes his flesh,

My veins throb and swell
between skull and skin.

crashes like waves against a cliff.
My sinuese are ready to explode
and bounce my eyes across
the room like super . . .
